Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) sent a letter to President Trump on Wednesday morning recommending the President to postpone the State of the Union Address to Congress that is scheduled for January 29th.

Pelosi cited “security concerns” being the reason, amid the partial government shutdown. (Video Below)

Pelosi sent the letter to the White House on Wednesday, on what marked day 26 of the partial shutdown of the federal government, with no compromise in sight to resolve the standoff over funding for border security. The impact of the shutdown is further deepening for furloughed federal workers and those forced to work without pay, reported Fox News.

“The U.S. Secret Service was designated as the lead federal agency responsible for coordinating, planning, exercising, and implementing security for National Special Security Events…” Pelosi wrote. “However, both the U.S. Secret Service and the Department of Homeland Security have not been funded for 26 days now—with critical departments hamstrung by furloughs.”

“Sadly, given the security concerns and unless government reopens this week, I suggest that we work together to determine another suitable date after government has re-opened for this address or for you to consider delivering your State of the Union address in writing to the Congress on January 29th,” Pelosi said in the letter.

However, security officials have pushed back on her claim, arguing that they are “fully prepared.” (Video Below)

The Department of Homeland Security pushed back the Speaker’s claims.

Homeland Security Chief Kirstjen Nielsen on Wednesday said her agency and the US Secret Service are “fully prepared” to provide security for President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address scheduled for January 29.

In a tweet, Nielsen wrote, “The Department of Homeland Security and the US Secret Service are fully prepared to support and secure the State of the Union. We thank the Service for their mission focus and dedication and for all they do each day to secure our homeland.” (Video Below)

The Department of Homeland Security is at the center of the dispute that triggered the shutdown, which began on Dec. 22. The president requested $5.7 billion in funding for border security and construction of a wall or physical barrier along the southern border. Democrats, though, have vowed to block any spending package that includes any funding for a border wall, reported Fox News.

Pelosi posted her letter to President Trump on Twitter, writing, “Today, I wrote to @realDonaldTrump recommending that we delay the State of the Union until after government re-opens, as the @SecretService, the lead federal agency for #SOTU security, faces its 26th day without funding.”
